October 2020 Club Meeting
Coral reefs cover less than 1% of the ocean’s floor, but support one quarter of the world’s fisheries. Within our lifetime we have lost between 25 to 40% of the world’s corals. Coral farming efforts are underway to rebuild populations, but the slow growth of coral through traditional fragmentation technology may not be fast enough to offset the decline.
Join us as Dr. David Vaughan talks about the “Eureka Mistake” that led to the development of a new micro-fragmenting technology that allows coral to grow over 25 times faster than natural growth. He is proving that we can regrow our reefs at a rate that can make a difference!

About our Speaker:
Dr. David Vaughan has held positions in aquaculture research and development for over 45 years. He founded and developed Oceans, Reefs and Aquariums Inc., a large marine ornamental production facility and has worked with Philippe Cousteau and Earth Echo International on coral reef restoration initiatives.
He started the coral restoration program at Mote Marine Laboratories’ Center for Coral Reef Research & Restoration, where he served as the Executive Director, and is responsible for developing the “micro-fragmentation” technology and implementation of coral “refusion” techniques. Today, as the President and Founder of the Plant A Million Corals initiative, he is helping people globally with this process as a scalable tool for reef restoration.
